As I am sure many of you saw on my instastories, I was recently in Orlando attending the American Kennel Club (AKC) National Dog Championship with Royal Canin. And oh my gosh y’all where do I even begin? It was probably the best 48 hours of my life. I have never been to a dog show before, so I really wasn’t sure what to expect. However, I was in absolute HEAVEN surrounded by hundreds, actually, probably thousands of dogs. Like…. is this real life? I was on the verge of happy tears multiple times because I was just so overwhelmed with excitement.
So, what exactly takes place at a dog show?
You know before I attended this, I wasn’t really sure either. I had watched a few on TV but let me tell you, watching on TV and experiencing first hand– it was nothing like I expected, it was WAY better. So the show lasted 3 days, and during this time there are events happening simultaneously throughout the event with the finals happening on the very last day. Some of the events included obedience, agility, and dock diving. I have to say dock diving was probably my favorite event to watch!
Every breed recognized by the AKC was represented at the show, which was so cool! I was able to learn about some breeds that I had never even heard of! There were booths set up everywhere where you had the opportunity to “meet the breeds” and learn about each one (and cuddle + love on them of course). I spent most of my time between the golden retriever (duh), bernese mountain dog, and neufundland booths! Those were my favorite!
Best In Show
The top honor to win at the AKC National Dog Championship is obviously best in show! The winner not only wins the title, but $50,000! To qualify to win best in show, the dog must first win best in breed. With over 100+ breeds represented at the show they are broken down into these categories: sporting, hound, working, terrier, toy, non-sporting, and herding. Then, one dog from each of those categories gets to compete to win best in show! I can’t spill the beans on who won just yet– you’ll have to tune in to watch January 1st on Animal Planet at 7:00 EST!
One of my favorite things about my job is the relationships I form with brands, and getting to hear first hand about their brand and what they represent. Meeting the Royal Canin team was such a pleasure, and I have never been around a group of people who were so passionate about their love for animals as they were. As an obsessed dog mom, I TOTALLY related– I loved having conversations with everyone on the Royal Canin team from their veterinarians, to their dietitians, and of course the PR and media team. Royal Canin was one of the sponsors for the AKC National Dog Championship this year! They are probably best known for their dog food! One of the coolest things was learning about the research Royal Canin put behind creating their dog foods which are specific for each breed and their nutritional needs. Just like humans, different breeds of dogs have different needs– and Royal Canin has a food specially formulated for dozens of dog breeds.
Be sure to tune in to Animal Planet of Jan 1st at 7:00 EST to watch the full show and see who wins Best in Show. I know that will be the perfect New Year’s Day plans snuggled up on the couch!
**Thank you so much to the Royal Canin team for sponsoring today’s post.**
