Happy 1st Birthday, Gal About Town!! Oh my gosh you guys– I can’t even believe it has been one full year of blogging. It has been absolutely amazing sharing my little corner of the internet with you all. When I started this blogging journey, I never believed it would turn into this (or that I would stick with it this long, because oh my lawdd you have no idea how much “behind the scenes” work goes into blogging.)
I have realized that although I have been blogging for a year, I have not really shared a lot about me via this blog (Instagram is mainly where things get real), so I wanted to share with you guys a little Q&A to get to know me a little better:
What inspired your blog?
So, this is actually not my first blog. Before fashion blogging was really a ‘thing’ I had a small blog called Pretty Little Lady. Now, I will be honest– it was pretty pathetic, I probably took the time to post maybe once a month, and I am pretty sure my mom and a handful of my friends were the only people who even knew it existed. I really did not have a ton of direction with the blog, plus I had no idea what I was doing half the time (Disclaimer: I still don’t!). Dare I pull out some archive photos from this blog? You will probably cringe. After that died down I was basically using Instagram as a platform to showcase my style and love for fashion. People kept asking me why I didn’t have a blog, I was always getting the “where did you get that?” questions, and my friends were encouraging me to give blogging another shot. So that’s what I did! And that is how Gal About Town was cultivated, but first I made a promise to myself that would really put 100% into this blog, which I will be honest can be VERY frustrating in the beginning because you feel like you are putting in so much time, effort, and money into this hobby and maybe like 12 people take the time to read it. There were so many times I questioned why I was sleep depriving myself to get a post up, or spending money for professional photos. But you know what? I truly love sharing my personal style with you all, and all of the sweet comments and emails that I get are seriously the BEST feeling in the world.
What style rule do you always follow?
You gotta feel good, to look good #preach! It doesn’t matter what it is, it’s about how it makes you feel. I am all about dressing for your body, and when you figure out what works for you, confidence radiates. Not everyone is going to look great in a peplum top, or a romper, and that’s okay! Knowing what pieces enhance your body shape is the key to shopping wisely. As you can see from my personal style, I am not one to shy away from color, textures, or trends. But that doesn’t mean everything works for me. There are some outfits or looks that I will come up with in my head and then I will try on and be like, “um hell no.” It is also important to have basic ‘go-to’ pieces that you know you are going to love no matter what.
What are some of your insecurities?
I’m perfect, what are you talking about? HA! (biggest lie ever)
Oh where do I even start? Being a blogger I am the face of my brand. I am the one wearing the clothes, posting pictures of myself everyday. It is so damn hard not to be critical of yourself and your body. I am pretty self conscious about my arms/shoulders. I was an athlete all of my life, and have always had a very athletic build. My shoulders are super broad, and my arms are muscular with a little bit of jiggle! Strapless anything=no.way. However, that doesn’t stop me from exposing my arms or wearing anything sleeveless. As I talked about earlier, I have just had to learn what pieces look most flattering and don’t draw attention to that part of my body.
Another insecurity of mine is not being liked by my peers, people I meet. Y’all might not know this, but I am pretty shy, new people and places give me anxiety sometimes. You could say I am a very Introverted Extrovert. Part of the business side of blogging is networking and meeting new people, which don’t get me wrong, I LOVE! But, I am always secretly freaked out that I will say the wrong thing, be awkward, that someone won’t like me, didn’t make a good first impression, have word vomit and talk about stupid things, etc. The struggle is real. Haha! However, this is something that I am constantly working on and I have realized part of being successful and fulfilled is putting yourself out there. Some people will like you, some people won’t. If you are truly genuine, that will always shine through.
What is your daytime job?
So my day job is pretty cool because it allows me to work from home (which is ahh-mazing.) I work for a family of real estate investors, we buy and flip houses in the Dallas area, do new construction, and are also buyers agents. I started working for this family as a nanny while I was in grad school. Since then, they have taken me under their wing with their real estate business. They also have two young girls who I have helped raise since birth, so I am basically their second mom. They call me “Nin-nee” which is so cute! I absolutely love kids so these girls are my world. I have been so blessed to have such amazing employers. I have never considered blogging full-time (for one that def can’t pay all my bills just yet.) However, who knows what the future holds for the success of my blog!
What are some random facts about you?
Believe it or not, I grew up in a very small, rural town on a ranch (we have cattle, goats, horses, mini horses, peacocks, dogs, and cats!) We did not have access to shopping malls (all we have is a Walmart), or anything like that. Heck, I did not even know what Louis Vuitton, or David Yurman were until I got to college. I love my family and the simple life back home, but I always knew I wanted to live in a big city and pursue fashion one way or another. I do love when I have the opportunity to visit home (which is about a 3 hour drive from Dallas), it is always so nice to relax and get back to my roots.
Another random fact. I drive with 2 feet. AHHHH. I always have, my body physically cannot operate a vehicle with only one foot controlling the gas and break– it feels SO unnatural and unsafe to me! I think I picked up the habit of driving with two feet because growing up, as soon as I was able to see over the steering wheel I always drove our farm trucks around our land. Being young, I always drove with two feet– and I think it just stuck with me! Don’t worry, I am actually a great driver, I have never been in a wreck!
What has been the most difficult part of blogging?
For me I would have to say it is most difficult sticking to a consistent schedule. I will be honest, I am not very organized. I TRY to post 3x a week, but I will be honest that rarely happens– usually it is more like 2x a week. There is so much that goes into each post, blogging is seriously like having a second job. It takes a lot of time and effort, and sometimes I would rather just go to bed early, TBH.
Okay, I LOVED doing that Q&A and I would love to incorporate more about my life and behind the scenes tidbits moving forward. I would LOVE to know from you guys what you would like to see more of on Gal About Town? Beauty posts? Hair Tutorials? What to wear to certain events? I would LOVE your feedback! Once again, thank you guys all so much for following along and celebrating one year of blogging with me! I love you all, *Group Hug*
Cheers to one year! Now, of course, on to this amazing outfit– I feel like I have babbled enough on this post and you have made it this far, I love you. Shop my outfit below!
