Well.. if the title of this post alone doesn’t put it all out there. I am officially a mom of two fur babies. Oh lorddd what did I just get myself into? I get so many questions about Ellie (and now my new baby, Banks) so I figured I would make a blog post dedicated to what I love most.. my pups 🙂

First things first I will share some of the most common questions I have gotten about Ellie and then I will spill all the details on Banks as well. I have obviously had Ellie longer so this post might be a little more dedicated to her because I can answer most of my experiences with her- will of course talk about baby Banks here too!

How Old Is Ellie?

She turned NINE in March and oh my gosh it makes me want to cry. She has a sweet grandma raccoon face that’s all white and honestly I think its just as cute or cuter than when she was a puppy. I got Ellie when I was a sophomore in college. We have always had dogs/animals growing up so I have always been an animal lover and knew I wanted a dog, but our dogs had always been outside dogs and I cannot stress enough to you the difference in bond between having a dog that stays inside with you vs an outside dog. Okay I feel like I got sidetracked with that.

Where Did You Get Her?

I got her from a family outside of Waco, Texas. I was friends with the daughter and had saw her post on Facebook that her parents golden retrievers had just had a litter of puppies. They were not breeders or anything just two family dogs that they decided to breed. I had been thinking about getting a dog, and had always grown up with large dogs so I immediately knew that was what I wanted. I put down a deposit (without telling my parents). I also knew that I wanted a darker (or red) golden female and Ellie was the only red female in the litter… soooo from the beginning she was mine by default. I remember telling my parents and they were like “oh great.. you are in college with no job, we are going to be stuck with all her vet bills and will probably end up keeping her”. Ha! I mean, they weren’t wrong about the first part…. I really didn’t think that through ( I was 19). I went and picked Ellie up at 6 weeks and immediately fell in love.

(Fun fact: The parents ended up having three litters and we fell so in love with Ellie and the breed that we ended up getting puppies from the other two litters. So between our family we have Ellie, Bennett (from the second litter), and Ayla (from the third). Bennett now lives with my ex boyfriend in Alaska (long story haha- but he is still my baby), and my sister has Ayla, who actually looks a lot like Ellie.

What Was She Like As A Puppy?

Oh my gosh you guys, she was the SWEETEST, CALMEST puppy. People always ask me how Ellie is SO chill. Honestly, she has been that way from the beginning. I thought something might be wrong with her the first few days we had her because she was not a rambunctious puppy like I was expecting! We tried to crate train her but that went out the window quickly so she does not have a crate. I honestly wish I remembered more from her puppy days but that was 9 years ago so some things are a little fuzzy. I do remember she was super easy to train- she can sit, stay, shake, and lay down. She has NEVER been into playing fetch- just part of her lazy personality I guess! I joke that she’s the only “non-retrieving” retriever! We also had her potty trained in a few weeks- my college boyfriend and I did all of her training. Golden’s are very smart, eager to please, and fairly easy to train so that was a huge factor in her picking up on things so fast I believe.

Is She Really THAT Lazy?

Hahaha if you haven’t watched the “sloth” highlights on my Instagram stories, please do. We joke that Ellie is a sloth because she really is sooooo chill and lazy and just loves to sleep in the craziest positions. It’s hilarious, she usually sleeps on her back with her little paws up in the air it’s too freaking cute. What I love about Ellie is when she’s outside or around other dogs, she’s playful and active. She lovessss to go on walks and loves to swim! However, when she’s pooped, she’s pooped. I have literally had her lay down in the middle of walks! She is also great though because when she is inside or in an environment where she needs to be calm, she just chills and sleeps. I don’t know how I got so lucky.

How Often Do You Get Her Groomed?

I only get her hair trimmed (I like to keep her coat long but it still needs a good trim every once in awhile) about 3-4 times a year but I get her bathed about 3-4 times a month. I like to keep her clean, smelling good, and her coat shiny and healthy. I take her to PetBar here in Dallas and I have a membership where she gets up to 4 baths a month there so I try to get my moneys worth and usually take her about every 10 days. I love the staff there and they all know her by name so I know she is always in really good hands which makes me happy! They always compliment how sweet she is and how healthy her coat always looks. PLUS getting her groomed frequently helps manage the shedding.

But HOW Do You Deal With All the Dog Hair?

I swear this mightttt be one of my number one DM’s that I get! Honestly…. there is no magic secret you just deal with it! I have had to stay on top of it more now that I have double the hair. If you don’t want to deal with dog hair then don’t get a dog who sheds- especially a long haired breed. It’s just inevitable. BUT there are some pretty easy ways to manage it that I have honestly just gotten into a routine of.  I have this roomba that runs everyday, I also vacuum every 3 or 4 days. Lint rollers in every room and in my car. I also swear by this tool for my couch and my bed. A follower recommended it to me about a year ago and it really is great!  Some months the shedding is worse than others. I have also found it helps that I get her groomed regularly. It has gotten to the point now that it is just a routine and it honestly isn’t as bad as you would think.

How Do You Keep Your White Bedding and Light Couch Clean?

Another V frequent question I get. Honestly my bedding is pretty easy! I have a duvet cover that I just take off and wash with my sheets and since they are white I use bleach and oxyclean! I wash my sheets every week since Ellie (and now Banks…lol) sleep in the bed with me quite a bit. I also have 2 sets of sheets that I rotate out while the other is washing. Honestly I think my bed gets dirtier from me sleeping in my spray tan than it does the dogs, ha! As for my couch… that is a little more difficult but I have been pretty committed to keeping it clean. Ellie likes to lay in the same spot most of the time so I usually keep a blanket there covering that spot unless I have company over. Sometimes her little paws still carry in some mud and dirt so for that I swear by Folex for spot treatment. My mom has used it forever and it is seriously magic in a bottle. It says its mainly for carpet but I use it on my couch and upholstered items as well and its amazing! Stains come right out! Honestly, you just do what you can. There is no way to keep your house spotless with dogs (or kids), so just maintain and prevent what you are able to and if you are that OCD about it then maybe you don’t need light bedding/furniture- ha!

Okay But What About Banks

Ahhhh oh my gosh yes, y’all I can’t believe it! Banks is the sweetest little guy ever! With Ellie being 9 I had been thinking about getting a new puppy in 2019. I work from home and have a back yard so I am able to give the attention and time it takes to train a new puppy. I also wanted to introduce a new dog to keep Ellie young and active as she gets older and for her to (hopefully) train the pup to be calm and enforce good behavior from observing her. I started looking for breeders back in December over Christmas. I knew I wanted a reputable FAMILY breeder (not a show breeder) that truly loved the breed. I found the breeder I got Banks from on the AKC (American Kennel Club) Marketplace. He is from TNT puppies and I was especially drawn to them because I could tell the breeder, Tina truly loves the breed and takes such good care of them. I also liked that Banks’ mom, Grace is a hospice therapy service dog. This is honestly what really helped me make my decision because I was hopeful that he would have a calm temperament, like his mom, and like Ellie! Obviously he is a puppy right now so he’s a little wild and LOVES to play. Probably a little more rambunctious than I remember Ellie being as a puppy. However, he is smart, loves to cuddle, and is eager to please (which is just a wonderful characteristic of the breed in general).

What Does Ellie Think of Banks?

I always tell everyone who asks this that Banks is obsessed with Ellie (he really is), and Ellie tolerates Banks. Haha! I could definitely tell Ellie was a little shook at first. But I really  made it a point to let her know she was still my baby and that she was the dominate one. I also took time to give her special attention and take her places solo. But her and Banks do play together quite a bit and it is so sweet. There are also a lot of ties when Ellie just wants to chill and sleep and he’s jumping all over biting her constantly. Y’all it is wild, she is SO tolerant and patient with him, its so sweet. He loves cuddling up with her any chance he gets, I cant wait to see them together as Banks grows.

If you are considering getting a golden I can’t tell you enough how much I love this breed and what a blessing the dogs have been to me. They truly are my children and complete my life and make things so much more fun! I can’t wait till I have kids (human kids that is) of my own one day and to see how they interact and love on the pups as much as I do. If you have any other questions about Ellie, Banks, or about the breed in general feel free to reach out I could talk about them all damn day!
