I have always been obsessed with the Kentucky Derby. Which is funny because I have never been (its on my 2018 bucket list). I like to think of it as the Super Bowl of horse racing meets Southern fashion show. I love anything with a good theme. From the hats, feminine dresses, seersucker, and bowties– so many things come to mind when I think of the Derby.
You know what also comes to mind? Drinks. Specifically mint juleps. Fun fact: Each year, almost 120,000 Mint Juleps are served over the two-day period of Kentucky Derby weekend at Churchill Downs Racetrack. Holy moly thats a lot of mint juleps! Can’t pencil in Churchill Downs for the weekend? No worries, my blogger bestie Natalie from The Fashion Hour and I (who just so happens to be a cocktail connoisseur) have got you covered.
First things first, you will need a mint julep in your hand. Here is my twist on the classic mint julep with our favorite Seersucker Southern Style Gin (I mean come on how appropriate).
– 2 ounces Seersucker Gin
– 2 ounces club soda
– Mint leaves + 1 Sprig to garnish
– 2 teaspoons honey or real maple syrup
– ½ cup crushed ice
I love this take on the original Mint Julep because its super light and refreshing!
Now… lets talk about what to wear! I prefer to keep things pretty simple, and let my hat do the talking. The bigger the hat, the better– am I right?! I am not a fascinator gal, when it comes to Derby style I say go big or go home. Clearly Natalie and I are both loving gingham right now and both went with gingham dresses. Have a Derby party coming up?! Be sure to pick up some Seersucker Gin (which also looks amaze on your bar cart) and make a Gin Julep! You can also shop my favorite Derby looks below:
